History of Pinewald – Berkeley Township, NJ

Pinewald is an unincorporated community in Ocean County, New Jersey, that is part of Berkeley Township. Between US Route 9 and the Garden State Parkway is where the community is located. Pinewald had a post office, land office, two banks, a commissary, and a railroad station when it was founded in the 1880s. On what is now the Barnegat Branch Trail, a 15-mile walking trail, the train station served Pinewald and the Bayville region.

In Pinewald, the Pines Hotel was on the crossroads of Central Boulevard and Nixon Avenue. It first opened its doors in 1891, with a capacity of roughly 200 people. The hotel was destroyed by fire in 1895.

The Royal Pines Hotel, which opened in 1930, was another hotel in Pinewald. It was located next to Crystal Lake and could welcome 400 people. The hotel passed through several owners and bankruptcies before being converted into a hospital and nursing home, including Dennis Hospital, Pinehaven, Bayview Convalescent Center, and Crystal Lake Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.

The Pinewald Golf Club Course, which is now part of the Cedar Creek Golf Course, first opened in 1930.
