Pinewald had a post office, land office, two banks, a commissary, and a railroad station when it was founded in the 1880s. In Pinewald, the Pines Hotel was on the crossroads of Central Boulevard and Nixon Avenue. It first opened its doors in 1891, with a capacity of roughly 200 people. The hotel was destroyed by fire in 1895.

The Royal Pines Hotel, which opened in 1930, was another hotel in Pinewald. It was located next to Crystal Lake and could welcome 400 people. The hotel passed through several owners and bankruptcies before being converted into a hospital and nursing home, including Dennis Hospital, Pinehaven, Bayview Convalescent Center, and Crystal Lake Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.
